Raymond Douglas Benton, of Janesville, died February 8, 2017 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital at age 92. Ray was born in Racine, WI on April 13, 1924, the son of Douglas and Emma (Draeger) Benton. He grew up in Racine, WI where he graduated from Horlick High School and later graduated from Rockford College. He served in the U. S. Army as a combat engineer from 1943 to 1946. Ray married Betty L. Jung on April 30, 1949. He was employed by Gilman Engineering as a plant engineer and retired from U W-Whitewater where he was employed as a building superintendent. Ray was a man of great faith. He was a charter member of St. Mark Lutheran Church where he served as a deacon and was a past president of the congregation. He enjoyed doing elderly ministry at area nursing homes. He had been a cub scout pack leader, loved playing cards, especially duplicate bridge, collecting model trains, rummaging, painting and drawing. He had served on the executive board of the Janesville Senior Citizen Center and was a life-member of Kienow-Hilt V.F.W. Post # 1621.
Ray is survived by his four children, Thomas (Susan) Benton, Karen (Gene) Fuhrmann, John (Jody) Benton, Barbara (Adam) Berman, seven grandchildren, April (Ken) Streeter, Michelle (Glen) Hinckley, Holly (Pat) Wickersham, Matt (Sarah) Benton, David (Gwen) Fuhrmann, Michael (Gretchen) Fuhrmann, Benjamin (Laura) Fuhrmann, 18 great-grandchildren with another on the way to be born in March and many dear friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Benton who died on March 26, 2004, his parents, his grandson, Joshua Benton, his sister, Lois Benton, his brother, Kenneth Benton and his mother in law and father in law, Alice and Fred Jung.
Ray’s family wishes to thank the entire staff at Cedar Crest for the loving care they gave our dad. Also our thanks to Dr. Murdy and the 4th floor staff at SSM St. Mary’s for the compassionate care they gave him in his final days.
A memorial service to celebrate Ray’s life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 11, 2017 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 2921 Mt. Zion Avenue, Janesville. Rev. Guy Vogel will officiate. Visitation will be from 12 Noon Saturday until the time of services at the Church. Military rites by Kienow-Hilt V.F.W. Post # 1621 will follow the services at the Church. Memorials may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church, ECHO or the Salvation Army in Ray’s name. The family is being assisted by Henke-Clarson Funeral Home (608-741-1713)

Raymond Douglas Benton, of Janesville, died February 8, 2017 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital at age 92. Ray was born in Racine, WI on April 13, 1924, the son of Douglas and Emma (Draeger) Benton.
